Millennium Monument

The Millennium Monument dominates Heroes' Square in Budapest, Hungary, built to mark the one thousandth anniversary of the Magyar tribes' arrival and settlement in the Carpathian Basin, an event traditionally dated to 895 or 896 AD. Designed by the architect Albert Schickedanz with sculptural work led by Gyorgy Zala, the monument's construction began in the 1890s and was largely complete for the 1896 millennial celebrations, though final sculptural additions were not finished until 1929. A central column rising to roughly thirty-six meters is topped by a statue of the Archangel Gabriel, said to be offering the Hungarian crown to the country's first king, Saint Stephen, and it is surrounded at its base by mounted bronze statues of the seven Magyar chieftains traditionally credited with leading the conquest. Two sweeping colonnades flank the column, lined with statues of Hungarian kings and statesmen chosen to represent the nation's history, making the monument as much a curated narrative of Hungarian history in stone and bronze as a single commemorative structure.
