Orton Plantation

Orton Plantation is a historic plantation house in Smithville Township, Brunswick County, North Carolina, built beside the Cape Fear River in 1735 by Roger Moore in the Classical Revival and Greek Revival styles. The plantation was originally worked as a rice farm by enslaved labor, and during the Civil War Union forces used the house as a military hospital, which helped preserve the structure. The Sprunt family owned and maintained the property, including its extensive public gardens, for 126 years before it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973; in 2010 it was purchased by Louis Moore Bacon, a descendant of the original builder, and closed to public access.
