Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport, located at Gardermoen north of the Norwegian capital, opened its main terminal in 1998 to a design led by the Norwegian architectural planning group Aviaplan under Gudmund Stokke, replacing the smaller Fornebu airport as Norway's principal international gateway. The terminal's design follows a deliberately restrained Scandinavian approach, built largely from Norwegian timber, stone and glass rather than heavier industrial materials, with long glue-laminated wooden roof beams left exposed overhead and extensive use of natural daylight throughout the departure and arrival halls. This restrained material palette was intended to reflect Norwegian design values of simplicity and honesty of materials rather than architectural spectacle, an approach that drew wide praise within the design profession. The airport received the Brunel Award for architectural design in transportation infrastructure in 1999 and has repeatedly ranked among the world's most highly regarded airport terminals for design quality.
