The Padrao dos Descobrimentos, known in English as the Monument of the Discoveries, stands on the northern bank of the Tagus River estuary in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belem, Lisbon. It marks the point along the river from which ships departed to explore and trade with India and the East, and it commemorates the Portuguese Age of Discovery of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
