FAQs

What inspired the design of The Shard?

Piano drew on London church spires and the masts of tall ships.

According to the building's own account, the architect Renzo Piano took inspiration from the spires of London churches and the masts of tall ships depicted by the Venetian painter Canaletto. He designed The Shard as a spire-like sculpture emerging from the River Thames, and the page adds that the slender pyramidal form was tuned to the mix of uses the building contains.
