Prato Rio

Residential Buildings

Prato Rio, also known as Hopewell, is a historic house near Leetown in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Its oldest section is a log cabin built around 1731 by Han Yost Heydt, enlarged with a stone extension in 1733 and joined in a hall-and-parlor plan, with a second story and further additions following through the nineteenth century. In 1774 the estate, then a 3,000-acre plantation, was bought by Continental Army General Charles Lee, who renamed it Prato Rio, Portuguese for stream on the meadow, and lived there as a recluse with his dogs until his death in 1782. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 11, 1973.
