Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval stone arch bridge across the Arno River in Florence, rebuilt after a 1333 flood and completed by the mid 1340s, traditionally attributed to Taddeo Gaddi though some historians credit Neri di Fioravanti instead. Its closed spandrel segmental arches, a single main span flanked by two smaller ones, carry a row of shops that once housed butchers and tanners and today hold jewelers and art dealers, a feature the bridge has kept for centuries. It is the only bridge in Florence to have survived the destruction of World War II.
