Praha hlavni nadrazi is the largest railway station in Prague, Czech Republic, and a major hub for regional, national and international rail service. It opened in 1871 as Franz Josef Station, named for the Austrian emperor, and was designed in Renaissance Revival style by Vojtech Ignac Ullmann and Antonin Viktor Barvitius; a celebrated Art Nouveau reconstruction carried out between 1901 and 1909 by the Czech architect Josef Fanta, with sculptural work by Stanislav Sucharda and Ladislav Saloun, made it the country's largest Art Nouveau monument. The historic platform hall is covered by a two nave steel arched roof spanning 33.3 meters twice over, 18 meters high and 233 meters long, and a separate brutalist terminal building was added between 1972 and 1979. The station is remembered as the departure point for the trains that carried children evacuated by Nicholas Winton in 1939, an event commemorated by memorials on its platforms.
