Puente Nuevo

The Puente Nuevo, meaning New Bridge in Spanish, is a stone arch bridge rising about 58 meters above the floor of the El Tajo gorge in Ronda, southern Spain, designed by architect Jose Martin de Aldehuela and built under chief builder Juan Antonio Diaz Machuca. Construction began in 1759 and took 34 years, finishing in 1793, after an earlier bridge on the same site collapsed in 1741, killing about 50 people. Its central arch contains a chamber that has served various purposes over the years, including as a prison during the Spanish Civil War.
