Pyramid of Unas

The Pyramid of Unas is the funerary monument of Unas, the ninth and final king of Egypt's Fifth Dynasty, built in the 24th century BC. Although it is the smallest of the Old Kingdom pyramids, it is historically significant as the first pyramid inscribed with the Pyramid Texts, spells intended to secure the king's afterlife carved into the walls of its underground chambers. The tradition begun in Unas's pyramid continued in the pyramids of later Old Kingdom rulers and carried into the Middle Kingdom through the Coffin Texts, which form the basis of the Book of the Dead.
