The pyramid complex of Userkaf was built for the pharaoh Userkaf, founder of Egypt's Fifth Dynasty, in the pyramid field at Saqqara northeast of the Step Pyramid of Djoser. Constructed of dressed stone around a rubble core, the pyramid is now ruined and resembles a conical hill of sand, which earned it the local name El Haram el Maharbish, meaning Heap of Stone. Western archaeologists recognized it as a royal pyramid only in the 19th century.
