Queens Head, Monmouth

The Queens Head is a public house at 1 St James Street in Monmouth, Wales, dating to about the 16th century and a Grade II listed building since June 27, 1952. It retains 17th-century plasterwork near the bar, though architect H. A. Dancey added mock black-and-white woodwork to the facade in 1922, and its stone exterior has since been plastered and re-clad in places; local accounts hold that Oliver Cromwell stayed there during the English Civil War and survived an assassination attempt inside. The pub passed into community ownership in 2005 and continues to operate with live music and a small library.
