Rocky Hill Castle

Rocky Hill Castle was a large plantation house between Town Creek and Courtland, Alabama, founded in the mid-1820s by James Edmonds Saunders. The main house, built between 1858 and 1861, mixed Greek Revival, Italianate and Gothic Revival elements in a single complex: a two story stuccoed brick house with side wings and Doric porticoes was connected to a five story Gothic Revival tower with crenellation and a Tudor arch entrance. The house fell into disrepair through the twentieth century and was demolished in 1961, after which a modern residence was built on the site. The property became known for local ghost stories, including the tale of the Ghost of the Angry Architect recorded in a 1969 book of Alabama ghost stories.
