San Procolo, Bologna

San Procolo is an early Gothic-style Roman Catholic church and former monastery-hospital on Via Massimo D'Azeglio in central Bologna, Italy, erected by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Monte Cassino by 1087 and dedicated to the martyred soldier Proculus of Bologna. Gothic tracery was added between 1383 and 1407, and the building underwent Renaissance-era reconstruction across the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries; the monastery also ran a hostel for pilgrims, and an adjacent hospital was converted in 1297 to care for abandoned children under different religious orders. The Benedictines held the site until 1796, when Napoleon suppressed the order in Bologna, after which the complex passed through further transformations under different owners.
