Savoy Hotel

The Savoy Hotel is a luxury hotel on the Strand in the City of Westminster in central London, built from 1886 by the impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte and opened on 6 August 1889 to a design by architect Thomas Edward Collcutt, with interiors informed by the designer Arthur H. Mackmurdo. The Art Deco style hotel was a technological pioneer for its time, introducing electric lighting throughout the building, electric lifts, and bathrooms with constant hot and cold running water in most of its rooms, comforts rarely available anywhere in Britain when it opened. Under the management of Cesar Ritz and the chef Auguste Escoffier, the Savoy set new standards of hotel service, entertainment, and dining that shaped the modern luxury hotel, and it remains a Grade II listed building, now managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, that has hosted generations of celebrities and dignitaries.
