Schillerhaus (Leipzig)

The Schillerhaus is a historic farmhouse in the Gohlis district of Leipzig, Germany, at Menckestrasse 42, built in 1717 as a single story clay and cob structure on a small rural estate. The German poet Friedrich Schiller, then 25, lived on its upper floor from May to September 1785, and while there he worked on the second act of Don Carlos, edited Fiesco, and wrote the first version of An die Freude, the poem later set as the Ode to Joy. The house is now a branch of the Leipzig City History Museum, holding about 100 objects related to Schiller and a recreated eighteenth century Saxon interior, with gardens used for seasonal events.
