Shelburne Farms

Shelburne Farms is a 1,400-acre nonprofit education center for sustainability and working farm on the shore of Lake Champlain in Shelburne, Vermont, designated a National Historic Landmark as a well-preserved example of a Gilded Age ornamental farm. Dr. William Seward Webb and Eliza Osgood Vanderbilt Webb established the estate in 1886 as a model agricultural property, with architecture by Robert Henderson Robertson and landscaping by Frederick Law Olmsted completed by 1887. Descendants of the founders converted the estate into a nonprofit educational organization in 1972, and it continues to operate as a working farm producing farmhouse cheddar cheese from a herd of Brown Swiss cows.
