Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial

The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is a Second World War military cemetery in Nettuno, near Anzio in Italy, dedicated in 1956 and administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Its monument was designed by the firm Murphy and Locraft, with landscaping by Allyn R. Jennings, and the cemetery covers 77 acres holding 7,858 American war dead arranged in gentle arcs of headstones across broad lawns beneath rows of pine trees. A memorial chapel at the site's southern end and a peristyle and map room to the north together carry the names of 3,095 further service members listed as missing, and the map room's bronze relief map and four fresco maps depict the military operations conducted in Sicily and mainland Italy. A visitors' center at the cemetery opened in May 2014, honoring the American forces who died advancing through Sicily and toward Rome in 1943 and 1944.
