The Simplon Hospice is a large building at the mountain saddle of the Simplon Pass, 1,998 meters above sea level, offering travelers and merchants food, accommodation and shelter from the harsh alpine climate. Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned its construction by decree on 21 February 1801, and it has always been run by the Canons of Saint Augustine.
