Smithfield is a Colonial-style plantation house in Blacksburg, Virginia, built between 1772 and 1774 by Colonel William Preston as his residence and the headquarters of his farm. The L-shaped house has high ceilings and unusually large rooms for a frontier home, including an ornate master bedroom placed between the parlor and dining room to impress guests, and it was the birthplace of two Virginia governors, James Patton Preston and John B. Floyd, from a family that produced four governors and helped found Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech and the University of South Carolina. Acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1959, the restored house opened to the public in 1964 and still operates as a museum with an eighteenth-century kitchen garden.
