Sotterley (Hollywood, Maryland)

Sotterley is a plantation house museum overlooking the Patuxent River in Hollywood, St. Mary's County, Maryland, whose main dwelling was built starting in 1703 and still incorporates post in ground construction from around 1717, one of the oldest surviving examples of that building technique in the region. The one and one half story, nine bay frame house is covered in beaded clapboard siding under a wood shingle roof, and the wider property includes an eighteenth century brick warehouse and early nineteenth century additions. Sotterley was home to Maryland governor George Plater and later to New York lawyer Herbert L. Satterlee, opened to the public as a museum in 1961, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000.
