Southdown Plantation

Southdown Plantation is a historic plantation house in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, on a plantation founded in 1828; the surviving main house, of hand-fired brick with cypress and pine woodwork, was built in 1858 and enlarged in 1893 with a second story and Virginia-style colonnaded walkways, later decorated with Favrile glass panels depicting plantation scenes. Southdown operated as a working sugar plantation until its mill was relocated in 1979, and the house and slave quarters opened to the public as a museum on June 27, 1982, following its donation by Southdown Land in 1975; it is maintained today by the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society. Southdown Plantation was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 18, 1974.
