Stagville

Stagville is a plantation complex in Durham County, North Carolina, with buildings raised from the late eighteenth century into the mid-nineteenth century as part of one of the largest plantation holdings in the American South, owned by the Bennehan and Cameron families. By 1860 nearly 900 enslaved people lived and worked across the estate's roughly 30,000 acres. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and today survives as the seventy-one-acre Historic Stagville, which includes the Bennehan House and the Horton Grove slave quarters, the only remaining two-story slave dwellings of their kind in North Carolina.
