Bishop's Palace, Llandaff

Archaeological Sites and Ancient Remains

The Bishop's Palace at Llandaff, also called Llandaff Castle, is the ruined residence of the bishops of Llandaff in Cardiff, Wales, a short distance south of Llandaff Cathedral, best known today for its surviving twin towered gatehouse. It was built in the late thirteenth century, probably under Bishop William de Braose, who took office in 1266, in a style close enough to Caerphilly Castle that the two may share a master mason. The bishops used it as a residence until early in the fifteenth century, when it was damaged during Owain Glyndwr's rebellion of 1402 to 1405 and the bishop moved to Mathern Palace instead; the building stood until at least 1610 but was probably destroyed during the English Civil War. It is now a ruin owned by Cardiff Council, protected as a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.
