Sugar Loaf Farm

Sugar Loaf Farm is an early nineteenth century cluster of agricultural, industrial and residential buildings located about seven and a half miles southwest of Staunton, Virginia and half a mile southeast of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it retains the only surviving brick grist mill in Augusta County, Virginia; the mill combines the mechanical principles of the prominent late eighteenth century mill designer Oliver Evans with the molded brick cornice work characteristic of vernacular architecture in the upper Shenandoah Valley in the early 1800s. The farm's three original buildings, the farmhouse, grist mill and miller's house, were built by David Summer at a time when Augusta County had become the center of one of the South's most dominant wheat growing and flour processing regions. Sugar Loaf Farm is today a privately run farm specializing in raising Black Angus cattle.
