Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel through arch bridge across Sydney Harbour, connecting the Sydney central business district to the North Shore. Built under the direction of engineer John Bradfield and constructed by the British firm Dorman Long to a design credited to consulting engineer Ralph Freeman and the Glasgow architects John Burnet and Partners, it opened in 1932 with granite faced concrete pylons framing its steel arch. Nicknamed the Coathanger for its arched shape, it is regarded, together with the nearby Sydney Opera House, as one of the defining images of the city and the country.
