The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor opened in 1918 at the base of Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colorado, built by the mining and oil magnate Spencer Penrose together with business partners Albert Carlton and C. M. MacNeill. Its main buildings, designed by the New York firm Warren and Wetmore, which also designed the Ritz-Carlton and Biltmore hotel brands, present a Mediterranean Revival style of pink stucco walls and red tile roofs set against a landscaped 3,000-acre estate laid out by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. The resort was built around an artificial lake, Cheyenne Lake, and its later additions have included multiple golf courses designed by architects such as Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones. It has maintained a five-star Forbes rating for more than five decades and is recognized as a National Historic Hotel of America.
