The Cove (Harrisburg, Virginia)

The Cove is a historic plantation house near Harrisburg in Halifax County, Virginia. Its main house, a one-and-a-half-story vernacular frame dwelling with a gable roof and flanking stone chimneys, was built around 1773 for county surveyor and vestryman William Sims, who had acquired the land by 1768 and established a tobacco plantation there. The Sims and Coleman families, connected by marriage, held the property for nearly two centuries and were among the largest planters and enslavers in Halifax County. The 1,123-acre property, which also includes two secondary dwellings, a hay barn, two log tobacco barns, and the remains of other structures including believed slave quarters, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 2006, and is now held by the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation under a conservation easement.
