The Houmas

The Houmas, also known historically as Burnside Plantation and today as Houmas House Plantation and Gardens, is a plantation complex and house museum west of Burnside, Louisiana, named for the Houma people who originally inhabited the area. Its Greek Revival main house, fronted by fourteen monumental Doric columns, was completed in 1840 by John Smith Preston on an estate whose roots reach back to a late-eighteenth-century plantation. The property, which today comprises ten acres and eight buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
