The Interlace

The Interlace is a residential complex of 1,040 apartments on the boundary of the Bukit Merah and Queenstown districts of Singapore, designed by the architect Ole Scheeren of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture with RSP Architects Planners and Engineers as project architects, and completed in 2013. Rather than the tall individual towers typical of dense Singapore housing, the project stacks short six-story rectangular blocks in an interlocking hexagonal pattern that rises as high as 24 floors in places, arranged around eight large communal courtyards, an approach its architects compared to a pile of irregularly stacked blocks. Apartments range from 74 to 590 square meters, the largest being penthouses at the top of the stacked arrangement, and the design was intended to maximize cross ventilation, natural light and shared green space across the complex. The Interlace won the World Building of the Year award in 2015 and the Urban Habitat Award in 2014.
