Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, known as Tocho, is the seat of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, designed by the architect Kenzo Tange with the structural engineer Kiyoshi Muto and completed in December 1990. The complex comprises three connected buildings, the tallest a 48-story tower that splits into twin sections above its 33rd floor, rising to 242.9 meters and making it the tallest city hall building in the world; Tange's design was intended to evoke both an integrated circuit and the vertical lines of a Gothic cathedral. Two observation decks on the 45th floor, about 202 meters up, are open to the public free of charge and offer views that can extend to Mount Fuji on clear days. In 2024 the building was recognized by Guinness World Records for hosting the world's largest projection mapping display.
