Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station is a major railway station and central rail hub in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, Japan, opened on December 20, 1914 as a single integrated terminus bringing together several railway lines that had previously used separate terminals. The three story red brick building was designed by the Japanese architect Tatsuno Kingo, who also designed the nearby Bank of Japan headquarters. Bombing in 1945 destroyed the original domed roofline and much of the third floor, and the station was rebuilt by 1947 with plain angular roofs in place of the domes; a five year restoration completed in 2012 recreated the original domed design. The station later became the terminus for the Tokaido Shinkansen, the high speed line that began service in 1964.
