Upper Shirley, Virginia

Upper Shirley is a historic plantation house west of Charles City in Charles City County, Virginia. It was created in 1866 when Hill Carter divided his family's Shirley Plantation estate between his sons; the original two-story, nearly square, stucco-covered brick dwelling was built between 1868 and 1870 by the firm of A. H. Marks and Bros. and enlarged in 1890. The house has a hipped roof and a Doric-columned porch, and its roughly nine-acre grounds were entered on the Virginia Landmarks Register in 1981 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The property is now home to Upper Shirley Vineyards.
