Vaucluse

Vaucluse was a villa and plantation in Fairfax County, Virginia, near the Virginia Theological Seminary, about three miles from Alexandria and ten miles from Washington, D.C. Revolutionary War surgeon Dr. James Craik was its first owner, and the estate later passed to Thomas Fairfax, 9th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, whose granddaughter Constance Cary lived there during the Civil War before becoming a writer under the pen name Refugitta. The mansion was destroyed in 1861 to clear ground for Fort Worth, part of the Civil War defenses of Washington.
