Vienna Hauptbahnhof

Wien Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station of Vienna, Austria, located in the Favoriten district, and Austria's busiest long distance railway station with around 268,000 commuters passing through daily. It replaced the earlier Wien Sudbahnhof terminus, becoming partly operational in December 2012 and fully operational in December 2015. The Zurich firm Theo Hotz Architects and Planners held the original design contract, and although the built station departs from their initial plans, the firm's design work shaped the final concourse and platforms, which include five island platforms under canopies roughly 210 meters long. The station integrates carbon dioxide controlled ventilation and geothermal energy systems, sound insulated windows and walls, a 20,000 square meter shopping center with about 100 shops and restaurants, and underground parking for 600 cars and more than a thousand bicycles.
