Villa Cimbrone

Villa Cimbrone is a villa in Ravello on Italy's Amalfi Coast whose site dates back at least to the 11th century and has passed through several noble families, including the Accongiogioco, Fusco, and Amici families. Ernest William Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, bought the property in 1904 and rebuilt it extensively with the local builder Nicola Mansi, incorporating architectural fragments gathered from across Italy in a mixture of mock-Gothic, Moorish, and Venetian styles, so little of the medieval structure remains visible today. Its best known feature is the Terrazza dell'Infinito, a belvedere with panoramic views of the coast, and the villa drew visitors including members of the Bloomsbury Group, D.H. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and Greta Garbo. It now operates as a hotel, with its gardens open to the public.
