Wellington Railway Station

Wellington railway station is the main railway hub of New Zealand's capital city, serving as the southern terminus of the North Island Main Trunk, the Wairarapa Line and the Johnsonville Line. It opened on 19 June 1937, replacing two earlier separate terminals at Lambton and Thorndon, and was designed by W. Gray Young of the Wellington firm Gray Young, Morton and Young in a neo-Georgian style, chosen without a design competition. Built on reclaimed harbor land, the U-shaped building was the first major structure in New Zealand designed with significant earthquake resistance, and its main entrance opens through eight Doric columns 13 meters high into a large booking hall that once included dining facilities, shops and a nursery. When completed it was the country's largest building and originally housed the head office of the New Zealand Railways Department; it was registered as a Category 1 Historic Place in 1986 and carries a First World War memorial listing 450 railway department staff killed in the war.
