A design approach and proposed style that uses algorithmic, parameter-driven computational tools to generate complex curvilinear forms and highly differentiated, adaptive building elements. The term was coined in 2008 by architect Patrik Schumacher of Zaha Hadid Architects, who framed it as a successor to modernism and postmodernism and set out the theory at length in a 2009 essay in the journal AD Architectural Design.
