Liebermann Villa

Liebermann Villa is a museum on the shore of Lake Wannsee in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district of Berlin, Germany, designed by the architect Paul Otto Baumgarten and completed in April 1910 as the summer home of the German painter Max Liebermann, co-founder of the Berlin Secession, who described it as his little castle by the lake. The estate carries a long garden divided in two by the house, with a view toward the lake, a well known birch path, hedged gardens and a garden terrace with a garden house. Under Nazi pressure Liebermann's widow, Martha Liebermann, was forced to sell the villa, and she took her own life before she could be deported to a concentration camp. The building reopened as a museum on 30 April 2006, displaying around forty of Liebermann's paintings of the villa and its garden, with his former studio on the upper floor and an account of the family's history, including its Nazi era confiscation, told through a multimedia installation by Heiko Daxl and Ingeborg Fulepp on the ground floor.
