The Stockholm Public Library near Odenplan in Stockholm, Sweden, opened in 1928 to a design by Gunnar Asplund, with a west wing added in 1932. Its drum shaped rotunda, inspired by Claude Nicolas Ledoux Rotonde de la Villette in Paris, marks Asplund shift from classicism toward functionalism, reducing classical forms to simplified geometry. It was Sweden first public library built on the open shelf principle allowing visitors to browse without asking staff, and its design influenced later buildings such as Charles Holden Arnos Grove Underground station in London.
