Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte

Cultural and Institutional Buildings

Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte, also known as Villa Reale, is a Neoclassical palace in Milan, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, designed by the architect Leopoldo Pollack and built between 1790 and 1796 for Count Ludovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso. Its main entrance faces Via Palestro and overlooks the Giardini Pubblici at Porta Venezia, and Pollack also laid out its English style grounds around an artificial lake. During the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy the palace housed the viceroy Eugene de Beauharnais and his family. The city of Milan acquired the building in 1920, and since 1921 it has held the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, the city's museum of modern art; the adjoining Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, built in 1955 on the site of the former stables, serves as a contemporary art exhibition space. Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.
