Pavia Civic Museums

The Civic Museums of Pavia are a group of museums in Pavia, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. They are housed in the Visconti Castle, built in 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti soon after he took the city, which had until then been a free city-state, with Bartolino da Novara credited as the castle's architect. The castle served as the main residence of the Visconti family while the political capital of the state remained at Milan. North of the castle a wide park was enclosed, which came to include the Certosa di Pavia, founded in 1396 in fulfilment of a vow by Gian Galeazzo Visconti as a private chapel of the Visconti dynasty. The Battle of Pavia in 1525, the climactic battle of the Italian Wars, was fought inside the castle park.
