Reefton School of Mines

The Reefton School of Mines, on Shiel Street in Reefton, New Zealand, taught the theory and practice of mining, including mathematics, surveying, chemistry and assaying, from 1887 to 1970. It grew out of the Reefton Mining Institute, formed in March 1885, where Professor James Gow Black of the University of Otago began lecturing that same year, and the school opened on Shiel Street in 1887 once land was granted by the government. After it closed in 1970 the building was used by St John Ambulance from 1972 to 1989 before becoming the Reefton School of Mines Historic Reserve, and it shares Heritage New Zealand Category 1 listing status with the Thames School of Mines, receiving that registration in 1990.
