Matanaka Farm

Matanaka Farm comprises five historic farm buildings near Waikouaiti in Otago, New Zealand, described as the oldest surviving farm buildings still standing in their original position in the country. The Australian whaler Johnny Jones founded the farm in 1840, bringing about twelve families from Sydney, and construction began that year with timber-framed, galvanised-iron-roofed structures, including stables, built from materials shipped from Sydney. The property changed hands repeatedly through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries before being donated to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust in 1976 and renovated the following year, and its buildings were designated Heritage New Zealand Category 1 structures on 11 December 2009 as historically outstanding.
