John Rabe House

The John Rabe House is a residence on the Gulou campus of Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, where the German Siemens representative John Rabe lived from 1932 to 1938. During the Nanjing Massacre he sheltered more than 600 Chinese refugees in the garden of the house and wrote the diaries that later documented the events. The building now houses the John Rabe and International Safety Zone Memorial Hall and the John Rabe Research and Exchange Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, which opened to the public on October 31, 2006 with more than 300 photographs and historical documents on display.
