Museum of Modern Art

Cultural and Institutional Buildings

The Museum of Modern Art, widely known as MoMA, was founded in New York City in 1929 and moved into its current Midtown Manhattan site on 53rd Street in 1939, when it opened a purpose-built International Style building designed by Edward Durell Stone and Philip Goodwin, one of the earliest American museum buildings in that style. The museum's building has been expanded and reconfigured repeatedly over its history to accommodate a growing collection of painting, sculpture, photography, film and design, most substantially in a major renovation and expansion completed in 2004 to a design by the Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi that added a tall atrium and reorganized the galleries around it, and again in a further expansion completed in 2019. MoMA's collection and its building have both been closely identified with the institutional history of modern art in the United States since the early twentieth century. The museum absorbed the neighboring American Folk Art Museum building briefly before demolishing it as part of the 2019 expansion, a decision that drew criticism from preservationists.

Entity-backed identity for the building-type enum value this building already carries, resolved to an architecture concept by an explicit value-to-entity map (phase 3 bucket conversion, docs\design_entity_backed_browse_buckets_20260928.md). The building-type fact itself stays on the building unchanged.
