San Francisco City Hall

San Francisco City Hall, the seat of city and county government in San Francisco, was designed by the architect Arthur Brown Jr. of the firm Bakewell and Brown and reopened on July 28, 1916, replacing an earlier city hall destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. Built in the Beaux-Arts style at the heart of the city's Civic Center as part of the City Beautiful movement, its dome rises 307.5 feet, a height its architects pointedly made 42 feet taller than the dome of the United States Capitol, over a building of more than 500,000 square feet framed by roughly 7,900 tons of structural steel. The building was seismically retrofitted after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and reopened from that upgrade in January 1999. It has also been the scene of notable public history, including the 1954 wedding of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe and the 1978 assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.
