A plantation house is distinguished from an ordinary large residence by its direct economic tie to the surrounding agricultural land and workforce it was built to oversee, and many of the plantation houses gathered under this group are preserved today as historic sites that document, rather than celebrate, that economic and social history, alongside the architecture itself.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonEra of EmergenceWell-attested1650 CE 1Origin RegionWell-attestedUnited States (American South) 1Browse ByAll Plantation HousesPlantation Houses325 entriesPlantation HousesBrowseComparePlantation Houses: AlabamaPlantation Houses37 entriesPlantation Houses: FloridaPlantation Houses26 entriesPlantation Houses: GeorgiaPlantation Houses24 entriesPlantation Houses: LouisianaPlantation Houses32 entriesPlantation Houses: MarylandPlantation Houses10 entriesPlantation Houses: North CarolinaPlantation Houses10 entriesPlantation Houses: Other RegionsPlantation Houses25 entriesPlantation Houses: South CarolinaPlantation Houses23 entriesPlantation Houses: TennesseePlantation Houses10 entriesPlantation Houses: VirginiaPlantation Houses122 entriesFilter Results6 entriesBuilding FamilyAllPlantation Houses (6)StyleAllGeorgian Architecture (1)Greek Revival Architecture (3)Italianate Architecture (1)Neoclassical Architecture (1)Palladian Architecture (2)MaterialAllBrick (5)Slate (1)Stucco (2)Timber (2)Building TypeAllGreek Revival and Italianate-styled mansion (1)Plantation (2)Plantation House (3)Completed YearAll1723 (1)1754 (1)1756 (1)1757 (1)1809 (1)1837 (1)1839 (1)1859 (1)Standing StatusAllStanding (6)GroupAllPlantation Houses (6)PlaceAllChile (1)United States (6)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 6MonticelloResidential Buildings5 linksMount VernonResidential Buildings4 linksNottoway PlantationResidential Buildings6 linksOak Alley PlantationResidential Buildings6 linksShirley PlantationResidential Buildings3 linksThe Hermitage (Nashville, Tennessee)Residential Buildings3 linksSources1.
