Founding of the Deutscher Werkbund

The Deutscher Werkbund was founded in Munich in 1907 by a group of German architects, designers and industrialists, including Hermann Muthesius, who sought to unite art, industry and craft to improve the quality and international competitiveness of German design. Rejecting both historicist ornament and pure craft-guild nostalgia, the Werkbund promoted a functional, well-made modern aesthetic suited to industrial production, and its members and debates, notably the 1914 Cologne exhibition dispute between standardized "type-forms" and individual artistic expression, directly shaped the design thinking that fed into the Bauhaus a decade later. The organization became an influential model for parallel design-reform movements in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and England.
