The Lighthouse of Genoa, known in Italian as the Lanterna di Genova, is the main navigational light for the Port of Genoa in Liguria, Italy, and a symbol of the city. A tower first stood on the site around 1128, but the present structure dates to 1543, when it was rebuilt in Renaissance style after wartime damage. The tower itself rises 76 meters, and including the rock outcrop it stands on the total height reaches about 112 meters, making it the tallest lighthouse on the Mediterranean and in Italy and the fifth tallest in the world. Between 1543 and 1902 it was the tallest lighthouse anywhere until France's Ile Vierge lighthouse surpassed it, and it ranks as the fourth oldest lighthouse still in continuous operation. It has been automated since 1936 and is maintained by the Italian Navy.
